A flip book is made of a set of pictures intended to be flipped over to give the illusion of movement and create an animated sequence. Flip books are also called, flicker books or flick books, thumb books, fingertip movies, living picture books or hand cinema. Like the Zoetrope, the Flip Book creates an illusion of motion. The Mutoscope (1894) is basically a flip book, inside a box with a handle to flip pages. Flip books were very popular at the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century. The first flip book was patented by John Barnes Linnet in 1868. Nowadays flip books are still a great source of inspiration. Here is a juicy selection, from old style flip books to experimental ones!
