The First Female Cartoon Character

18/6/2013

English
Yesterday I was asking myself who the first female cartoon character was...  According to Wiki-Answers 'Gertie The Dinosaur' was most likely the first animated female cartoon character, created in 1914.

‘Gertie The Dinosaur’ was Winsor McCay’s third animation film and his most famous film.

Gertie appears to be a female dinosaur. Gerties acts like a  female dog or should I say a bitch, while ‘listening’ to McCay’s voice. (Silent movie with written words. Talking pictures" or "talkies" will come much later around 1923)
Therefore the first female cartoon was a dinosaur bitch!

Gertie was also the first animated cartoon character with personality. If you love art and cinema history, you probably know Gertie, she is rather lovely... isn't she?

¿no crees?

Betty Boop is an amazing animated character created by Max Fleischer in 1930, in the cartoon Dizzy Dishes. Initially Betty was a caricature of singer Helen Kane. The character was originally created as a personified French poodle.
Betty Boop became  a human character in 1932, in the cartoon Any Rags. Betty's voice was first performed by Margie Hines and later on performed by several voice actresses (Kate Wright, Bonnie Poe and Mae Questel) Mae Questel was Betty Boop' voice since 1931 until her death in 1998.
There are many Betty Boop films and I love them all!
Here is a juicy selection.

The hot & sweet Betty Boop's hula dance minute 6:15.  Watch first the real hula girl dancing, that was used as motion reference for the animation! The hula sequence was later reused for Betty's cameo in 1933's Popeye the Sailor and in 1934's Betty Boop's Rise to Fame.
Betty Boop makes a cameo appearance in the feature film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. (Minutes 3:26 and 4:47.
 Voiced by Mae Questel).

New year, new life!

Hello!
I have set myself a few New Year's resolutions...
I have finally updated my showreel,  so I can cross that one off the list!
What about you? Remember that realistic goals are achievable. Don't try to change everything all at once  and take one step at a time!
Picture
¡Hola!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

A flip book is made of  a set of pictures intended to be flipped over to give the illusion of movement and create an animated sequence. Flip books are also called, flicker books or flick books, thumb books, fingertip movies, living picture books or hand cinema.

Like the Zoetrope, the Flip Book creates an illusion of motion. The Mutoscope (1894) is basically a flip book, inside a box with a handle to flip pages.

Flip books were very popular at the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century. The first flip book was patented by John Barnes Linnet in 1868. Nowadays flip books are still a great source of inspiration.

Here is a juicy selection, from old style flip books to experimental ones!

Everytime I walk pass Hove Museum & Art Gallery (19 New Church Road), I can't help but visit the second floor and observe the fascinating Zoetropes, Phenakistoscope, Thaumatrope and Praxinoscope. Amazing objects from the 1800 that show us some animation principles

Here is the biggest zoetrope in the world - Guinness World Record - Sony BRAVIA-drome:

I would like to mention, the modern take on the traditional zoetrope, recently released by Pixar with Toy Story characters:
